Beginner difficulty rubric

Each system is scored from 1 (effortless) to 5 (advanced). The rating is based on five factors we measure during our test bench review: initial assembly time, the number of manual steps before the first grow cycle, whether nutrients are pre-measured or require mixing, how often the unit needs hands-on intervention, and how forgiving the system is of beginner mistakes (e.g. over-filling or missed top-ups).

1Effortless
Plug in, add water, insert pod. No tools, no mixing, no calibration. Ideal for a first-timer who has never grown anything before.
2Easy
Minor assembly (under 20 min). You may need to pour in a single bottle of nutrients and set a timer, but the manual walks you through it line by line.
3Moderate
Assembly takes 20–30 min. You will balance pH, mix A+B nutrients, and transplant seedlings. The app or manual helps, but you must stay involved weekly.
4Challenging
Substantial build time (45 min+). Multi-stage nutrients, calibration, and pruning are required. Best for someone who has already grown one soil-less kit successfully.
5Advanced
DIY-level plumbing, electrical wiring, or custom programming. Not recommended for beginners unless they have prior hydroponic or engineering experience.
