A hydroponic tower turns 2 square feet of floor into a salad farm. The catch: most are $400+ and the differences only become obvious after you've grown in one for a month. We did exactly that, in four different towers.

1. Gardyn Home Kit 3.0 — Best overall

The only tower designed indoor-first. Two LED columns provide the light, a wicking system feeds the plants. The AI cameras flag wilting plants in the app. Yield in our 8-week trial: 2.1 kg of mixed greens. Downsides: pricey, and the membership-pod model nudges you toward $39/month.

2. Lettuce Grow Farmstand — Most flexible

Modular: start at 12 plants, add tiers up to 36. No grow lights by default — perfect for a sunny patio or south-facing window. Add the Glow Rings to go fully indoor for an extra $200. Recirculating NFT system that's quiet and efficient.

3. Tower Garden FLEX — Best yields

The only real aeroponic tower in the consumer market. Plants get misted with nutrient solution every 15 minutes — roots grow faster, yields are 20%+ higher than NFT or DWC. Built for a patio or greenhouse; indoor lights are an add-on.

4. LetPot Tower — Best budget

21 sites, integrated LED, under $250. Build quality is closer to a smart countertop garden than a Gardyn — but it grows real salad and costs a third of the premium options.

What we'd skip

The "ExoTower 30-plant tower" knockoffs on Amazon. Plumbing leaks, no real warranty, plants stretch under the weak built-in LEDs. Save up for a Lettuce Grow or buy a LetPot.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a south-facing window for a tower?

Only for the Lettuce Grow and Tower Garden FLEX in their base configurations. The Gardyn and LetPot include LEDs and grow anywhere.

How much electricity does a tower use?

100–150 kWh/year — about $12–$20. The pump and LEDs together are less than a desk lamp.

Can towers grow tomatoes?

Yes — the Tower Garden FLEX and Lettuce Grow Farmstand both grow cherry tomatoes well outdoors. Indoor towers struggle because the canopy fights for light.
